BREAKING: ASUP to Embark on Indefinite Nationwide Strike on April 6th

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has declared that it would embark on a nationwide strike beginning from April,6 2021 over alleged neglect by government, non implementation of agreements, non payment of salaries, among others.

ASUP President, Mr Anderson Ezeibe who disclosed this at the end of the 99th meeting of the National Executive Council of the union at Hassan Usman Polytechnic, Katsina, on Friday, 19 March 2021, said the industrial action is to draw the attention of the government on the need to release the 10 months arrears of the new minimum wage owed members in federal polytechnics and the implementation of same in states yet to implement the new minimum wage.

He listed the issues in contention to include non- implementation of ASUP/FG agreement of 2010, non-payment of salaries and arrears of the new minimum wage in some state-owned Polytechnics, failure to implement the 2014 NEEDS Assessment Report on government-owned polytechnics, non-implementation of 65 years retirement age for academic staff in some state-owned polytechnics, non-payment of promotion arrears in federal polytechnics  among others.

While also admitting a meeting with the Federal Government had been held in October 2020 on some of the pending issues, the union however insisted the outcome of the meeting was insignificant as the government failed to implement the resolutions reached and has consistently failed to address them overtime.
