FG Issues Statement Amidst Calls For Isa Pantami’s Resignation
The Federal Government has issued statements concerning allegations of terrorism against the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Honorable Isa Ali Pantami.
Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to president Buhari, Mr Garba Shehu, who made the statements via a series of tweets on his verified Twitter account noted that the “cancel campaign” against the minister was instigated by those who stand to profit should the minister be removed from office.
Garba further stated that Isa Pantami has rightly apologised for the utterances he made over two decades ago which had some terrorism undertone, stressing that the minister was too young then to understand the implications of his word but will not repeat them anymore as he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong.
He listed some of the achievements recorded under Isa Pantami’s leadership since he became a minister in the country to include; leading the charge against illegal data deductions and pricing, establishing ICT start-up centres to boost youth entrepreneurship and create jobs, changing policies to ensure locally produced ICT contents are used by ministries, deregistering some 9.2 million SIMs, thereby ending the ability for criminals and terrorists to flagrantly use mobile networks undetected, among others.
Recall that for about a week now, many Nigerians and opposition parties have taken to their social media platforms to call for the resignation of Isa Pantami as statements which he allegedly made some years ago that may suggest his affiliations with terrorists emerged. This has caused certain Twitter hashtags such as #PantamiOut, #ResignIsaNow to take the number one trend on Twitter for days non-stop
