In a joint statement released exclusively to The Today Show on Thursday, April 15, 2021, American singer Jennifer Lopez and her estranged fiance Alex Rodriguez have officially broken off their engagement, saying they would be going their separate ways but would remain as friends as they’re better off that way.
“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects,” they told The Today Show.
“We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
It would be recalled that the couple sent social media into a frenzy after it was reported that their two years engagement had been called off.
According to PageSix, the couple ended their relationship in the wake of his scandal with “Southern Charm” star Madison LeCroy. They reportedly tried to amend what was left of the relationship during their time in the Dominican republic after the scandal broke but now it’s obvious that didn’t work out well for them.
They began dating in 2017. In March 2019, they announced their engagement. They were originally set to tie the knot last year in a lavish ceremony in Italy but was moved to cancel due to gathering restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A source had previously told E! That Lopez had in the past expressed willingness “to do whatever it takes” to maintain their relationship as their split was reportedly tied to trust issues but “after months of questioning things and fighting, Jennifer felt like she could not trust Alex anymore”, the source said.
