Meet The First Nigerian and African Female Player to Win UEFA Women’s Champion’s League
Nigeria’s Super Falcons Striker, Asisat Oshoala has become the first Nigerian and African female player to win the UEFA Women Champion’s League, following a 4-0 defeat by Barcelona Football Club against Chelsea Football club on Sunday, May 16 at the Gamla Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.
Oshoala, 26,who plays for Barcelona women’s team, got into the game at the 71st minute as they defeated Chelsea in the final of the 2020-21 edition.
A ruthless first-half performance saw the Spanish team cruise to the landmark victory when Melanie Leupolz scored an own goal to give them the lead inside the first 60 seconds.
It didn’t get any better for Chelsea as they committed a foul and conceded a penalty which was calmly converted in the 14th minute by Alexia Putellas.
Barcelona explored another loophole in the Chelsea team and they scored the third goal in the 21st minute.
Chelsea’s first-half miseries were far from over as Barcelona added a fourth goal in the 36th minute.
Though there were no more goals in the second half, the mission was already completed for Barcelona and the damage for the Chelsea Women’s team.
Barcelona, wanting more goals, then introduced Oshoala for Spanish midfielder Jennifer Hermoso in the 71st minute. Oshoala scored a fifth goal in the closing stages of the game, but it was ruled offside.
While Sunday’s final was the first-ever for Chelsea, it was the second time for Barcelona who reached the showpiece final in 2019 before losing 4-1 to Lyon in Budapest.
Asisat is also a four-time African Women’s Player of the Year.
