Professor Attahiru Jega Advises Against Confirmation of Lauretta Onochie’s Appointment
Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has advised against confirming the appointment of a presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie as a commissioner of the national electoral body.
Jega further called on President Muhammadu Buhari to replace her with another eligible female candidate, noting that her nomination is an avoidable controversy and should be replaced by President Buhari should replace her with another eligible woman.
Recall that the president had nominated Lauretta for the position and she was screened by the Senate Committee on INEC, on Thursday, July 8, where she also denied allegations of being a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2019.
However, Daily Trust quoted Jega as saying: “This kind of controversy is really avoidable. Any person who generated such a controversy; the appointing authorities should be careful because you don’t want to appoint anybody that can raise suspicions or doubts or can lead to a loss of trust of the electoral management body.”
