WhatsApp Introduces Voice and Video Calls Feature On Its Desktop App

WhatsApp has introduced a private and secure one to one voice and video calling feature to its desktop App for the first time. This avails users the chance to engage in voice or video calls on a larger screen while using the App.

The Facebook owned messaging platform in a statement by a spokesperson said the decision was made after a “significant increase” was recorded during the lockdown caused by the corona virus pandemic where video calling apps like Zoom recorded huge spikes in popularity.

“Answering on a bigger screen makes it easier to work with colleagues, see your family more clearly on a bigger canvas or free up your hands to move around a room while talking,”

“To make desktop calling more useful, we made sure it works seamlessly for both portrait and landscape orientation, appears in a resizable standalone window on your computer screen, and is set to be always on top so you never lose your video chats in a browser tab or stack of open windows” the spokesperson said in a blog post.

The  Facebook-owned app has also confirmed it is planning to expand its desktop offering to group calls in the future.

With this new move, this puts them in similar standing with the likes of Apple’s FaceTime, Microsoft’s Skype.

with over two billion users globally, WhatsApp is second only to its parent firm, Facebook Inc’s.
